# Responses and contexts

> Responses and contexts in Prompt Verse share a prompt’s tree: a response is an example answer, a context is background you can nest.

Source: https://prompt-verse.io/docs/responses-and-contexts/

A prompt, a response and a context are the same kind of document: a title and a tree of pieces. The **kind** says what the tree is for.

| Kind | What it is |
|---|---|
| `prompt` | Instructions you render and hand to your AI. This is the default. |
| `response` | An example of the answer you want. |
| `context` | Background you attach to other prompts. |

They are private to your workspace until you share them. Search finds them by title, tag or text, and a collection can hold them. Rendering is the same plain step as for a prompt: pieces resolved, wrappers applied, `{{variables}}` filled, missing names reported. Rendering does not call a model.

## Nesting

A prompt can include another document by reference.

- A nested **response** is rendered as an example of the answer, titled with that response’s name, so the model can see the shape you want.
- A nested **context** comes in as a section of background, under its own title.

The four prompt types still apply to the tree. A render that breaks the type says so. See [Writing prompts with variables](/docs/writing-prompts/).

## For your AI

Create one with the `prompts` tool and action `create`. Set `kind` to `prompt`, `response` or `context`. `list` takes the same `kind` when you want only one of them. `get`, `render`, `search`, `share` and `update` work on all three. See the [prompts reference](/docs/reference/prompts/).

```json title="Create a response"
{ "tool": "prompts", "action": "create", "args": { "kind": "response", "title": "A calm refund reply", "tree": "We cannot refund this order. Here is what we can do." } }
```

Sharing a response or a context by link uses the same private, unlisted and public settings as a prompt. See [Sharing a prompt](/docs/sharing/).
